1341 HP Mercedes-AMG GT XX – Hypercar Concept

1 min read

Mercedes-Benz has just recently admitted that its EV program has failed. All automakers thought that EV was the future, but the customer loves what they love, and that’s internal-combustion powertrains. The EQ Program has been nothing but a bunch of boring EVs made for the retired.

But now Mercedes-AMG aims to change that with its new EV hypercar concept. This new concept car, called the Mercedes-AMG GT XX, is a clear indicator that the brand’s new electric performance halo model is nearly here.

Mercedes-AMG GT XX – Design

The GT XX has a Maserati-esque, mouth-shaped grille and a tapered rear end with, well, no rear glass? Mercedes design chief Gorden Wagener says that the six circular taillight units are meant to evoke the quad exhaust tips seen on AMG gas models, which really doesn’t make sense.

This vehicle is technically a fastback EV sedan but sits in the hypercar category. The exterior design makes it look like a very weird Happy Meal toy car. This Fastback is targeted directly at the Porsche Taycan, but we all know which is which.

Mercedes-AMG GT XX – Interior

The GT XX’s interior seems to change course when compared with some of the current boring EQ vehicles and their massive hyperscreens covering the dashboard. There are still two large screens inside, but the look is more “driver-focused” and “minimalist”. There are lightweight seats with carbon-fibre structures, and the squared-off steering wheel, which takes its inspiration from GT3 race-car cockpits.

Mercedes-AMG GT XX – Powertrain

The powertrain has three motors that produce 1341 BHP, and Mercedes says the top speed is more than 370 KM/H which is a massive claim. AMG hasn’t made any bold claims on the 0-100 KM/H time yet but we expect it to be well under 2.6 seconds. With its 800-volt electrical architecture, the platform that underpins this car introduces new battery technology to the Mercedes range as well.

Mercedes-AMG GT XX Verdict – Another Potential Flop?

Over the past 3-4 Years, Mercedes-Benz has made nothing but questionable choices. From removing the most iconic V8 engine from one of its most sold super-sedans, the C63, discontinuing the regular S65 sedan, making an electric G-wagon, and the list continues. But Mercedes-Benz has started to realise its flaws in choices and has started to slowly get back on track; this vehicle could be proof of that emotion.
