Next-Generation Corolla Gets A Major Overhaul
Toyota is preparing a major update for the Corolla, with the next generation expected to bring sharper styling, a more modern cabin and a wider range of powertrains. The new sedan is expected to use a heavily revised version of Toyota’s TNGA-C platform. It could support petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains, giving Toyota more flexibility across global markets.
New Platform For Multiple Powertrains

The upcoming Corolla is expected to use a new platform designed to accommodate different propulsion systems. While it could remain closely related to the current TNGA-C architecture, the revised platform will support everything from conventional petrol engines to battery-electric powertrains. This approach could also help Toyota adapt the Corolla to different regulations and customer preferences across markets.
Petrol & Hybrid Powertrains
The next-generation Corolla is expected to retain a petrol engine alongside a new hybrid setup. The hybrid could use a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing around 134 HP combined. Toyota engineers have indicated that the system could be 10 to 20 percent more efficient than the current hybrid. An all-wheel-drive version with a rear electric motor is also possible.
New Turbocharged Engine Could Arrive
Toyota has confirmed that its new 1.5-litre engine can accommodate a turbocharger. This could make it a potential powertrain for the petrol-powered Corolla. Alternatively, Toyota could continue with an updated version of the existing 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. However, final engine specifications are yet to be confirmed for the next-generation model.
PHEV & Electric Versions
For the first time, the Corolla is expected to gain a plug-in hybrid variant with a larger battery and greater electric driving range. Toyota is also developing a fully electric Corolla, although its availability in different markets remains unclear. The EV could offer single- and dual-motor configurations, with at least 250 miles of expected range in markets where it is offered.
GR Corolla Could Get More Power
Toyota is also expected to continue the performance-focused GR Corolla. Reports suggest that the next-generation model could use a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing up to 395 HP. However, Toyota has not confirmed the final specifications or launch details for this performance version.
Exterior & Interior Design
The next Corolla is expected to feature a sharper exterior inspired by Toyota’s recent concept designs. The cabin could also receive a major technology upgrade, with larger displays, a more spacious layout and simplified controls. The fastback-style roofline may also influence the practicality of the new sedan, although Toyota’s final production design remains unconfirmed.
Competition In The Middle East

The new Corolla will continue to compete with compact sedans such as the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra and Mazda 3. In the Middle East, the Corolla remains a familiar name across markets such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. However, powertrain availability is likely to vary between countries based on local demand and regulations.
Prices In The Middle East
Toyota has not announced pricing for the 2028 Corolla in Middle Eastern markets. The new petrol and hybrid versions are expected to remain positioned as relatively affordable compact sedans, while PHEV and EV variants could command a premium due to their larger batteries and additional technology. UAE and Saudi Arabia pricing is likely to be announced closer to their respective launches.
Expected Launch Timeline
The next-generation Toyota Corolla is expected to arrive sometime in 2027 as a 2028 model-year vehicle. Toyota is yet to confirm launch dates for individual Middle Eastern markets. More details about its engines, hybrid system, PHEV battery and electric version are expected closer to its global debut.
