Yangwang U9’s 3,000-HP Electric Hypercar Aims To Outspeed Rimac Nevera

1 min read

Chinese luxury EV maker Yangwang, a division of BYD, is gearing up to challenge the Rimac Nevera’s Nürburgring record with an updated version of its 1,300-horsepower U9 hypercar. Regulatory filings reveal a “Track Edition” or “Nürburgring Edition” boasting a staggering combined output of 3,019 horsepower from four electric motors, nearly three times the power of the original model, positioning it as one of the most powerful electric hypercars globally.

Performance & Powertrain

The upgraded U9 retains its quad-motor all-wheel-drive layout but amplifies power delivery to about 744 horsepower per wheel, enabling a top speed exceeding 217 MPH, with reports that it has surpassed this figure in practice. The vehicle runs on the same 80-kWh LFP battery pack as the standard U9, which delivers an estimated driving range of approximately 280 miles under CLTC standards. Ultra-fast charging supports a 500 kW DC input, allowing the battery to jump from 30% to 80% charge in roughly 10 minutes.

Design & Features

Visually, the Track/Nürburgring Edition closely resembles the base U9, featuring a carbon-fibre roof, massive fixed rear wing, and a prominent diffuser with adjustable blades. The wheels have been downsized to 20 inches, with wider front tires for enhanced grip. Optional aerodynamic aids like a carbon fibre splitter and electronically adjustable rear wing further optimise high-speed stability.

A distinctive feature is the DiSus-X intelligent suspension system, which enables dynamic body movements, letting the car “dance” or hop over obstacles, offering unparalleled agility and responsiveness on track and challenging terrains.

Nürburgring Ambitions

While it remains unconfirmed whether Yangwang will attempt to officially break or set new Nürburgring lap records with this hypercar, the company is expected to announce such endeavours if and when they occur. Achieving the fastest electric lap time at the Nürburgring requires far more than sheer power; factors like aerodynamic efficiency, tire technology, and driver skill are crucial. Nonetheless, with its unprecedented power output and sophisticated dynamics, the U9 Track Edition stands a strong chance of competitive performance.

Final Word

The Yangwang U9 Track/Nürburgring Edition cements China’s growing presence in the highest echelons of electric hypercar performance, pushing the boundaries with over 3,000 horsepower and advanced tech like the DiSus-X suspension. As it aims to eclipse rivals like the Rimac Nevera, the U9 exemplifies the rapid innovation and ambition fueling China’s electric vehicle revolution. Enthusiasts worldwide will be watching closely as Yangwang seeks to turn raw power into Nürburgring legend status.
