2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class’s Big Refresh Puts Stars In Its Eyes

2 min read

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class receives one of the most extensive mid-cycle updates in the model’s history, blending visual drama, artificial intelligence, and more powerful engines. While the luxury sedan keeps its familiar shape, nearly everything beneath the surface has been revised to keep the S-Class firmly at the top of the flagship segment.

Mercedes-Benz says more than half of the car’s components are new or updated, making this refresh far more than a cosmetic touch-up.

Star-Studded Exterior Updates

The most noticeable changes appear after dark. The 2027 S-Class debuts a new lighting signature built entirely around the Mercedes three-pointed star. Both the headlights and taillights feature star-shaped elements, instantly differentiating the refreshed model from earlier versions.

An illuminated grille is now available, complete with a pattern of glowing Mercedes stars, while an optional light-up hood ornament adds extra theater without distracting the driver. Mercedes designed the ornament so its glow is not visible from the driver’s seat.

The headlights also gain Ultra Range high beams with side-to-side swivel capability and a new partial high-beam function. Puddle lamps now project “Mercedes-Benz” onto the ground, and new 50-spoke Manufaktur alloy wheels complete the exterior updates. The body panels themselves remain unchanged.

AI-Focused Interior With Bigger Screens

Inside, the changes are far more dramatic. The S-Class finally adopts Mercedes’ full-width Hyperscreen setup, a single glass panel housing three displays. These include a 12.3-INCH driver display, a 14.4-INCH central touchscreen, and a 12.3-INCH passenger screen. Unlike other models, the driver display sits at a more upright angle for better visibility.

The latest MBUX system now integrates Google automotive AI and introduces a more animated digital assistant. Drivers can choose between an animated Mercedes star or a character called “LittleBenz,” designed to feel more conversational and human-like.

Rear-seat passengers benefit as well. Optional rear screens grow to 13.1 INCHES, and built-in cameras enable video conferencing on the move. The rear-seat tablet has been removed, replaced by two handheld remotes. High-end audio systems now support Dolby Atmos, and Active Ambient Lighting remains available.

New Comfort & Control Features

Mercedes continues to push luxury boundaries with new comfort technology. The 2027 S-Class becomes the first production car to offer heated front seatbelts, adding to the existing list of heated seats, armrests, headrests, and steering wheel.

Digital air vent control allows vent positions to be saved to memory settings, while still allowing manual adjustment. A redesigned steering wheel replaces several touch-sensitive controls with physical buttons, improving usability. The center console is also revised and now includes dual wireless phone charging pads.

More Powerful Powertrains Across The Range

The refreshed S-Class retains its familiar model lineup: S500, S580, and S580e, but all receive meaningful upgrades.

The S500 uses a turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-LITER INLINE-SIX producing 442 HP and 443 LB-FT of torque, with brief overboost pushing torque to 472 LB-FT. The S580’s twin-turbo 4.0-LITER V-8 is heavily revised and now makes 530 HP and 533 LB-FT, up significantly from before. Both engines use a 48-VOLT mild-hybrid system with a 23-HP starter-generator.

The S580e plug-in hybrid pairs the INLINE-SIX with an electric motor for a combined 576 HP. Official electric-only range figures have not yet been released, but the outgoing model offered up to 48 MILES of electric driving. All versions use a 9-SPEED automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

Advanced Suspension & Rear Steering

Rear-wheel steering is now standard, with up to 4.5 DEGREES of rear steering included on all models. A 10-DEGREE rear-steering system remains optional for enhanced low-speed maneuverability.

AIRMATIC air suspension is standard, while Active Body Control remains optional. New for 2027 is iDamping, an intelligent damping system that adjusts in advance based on road data shared through Mercedes’ cloud network, improving ride comfort and stability.

On-Sale Timing & Future Variants

The updated S500, S580, and S580e are scheduled to go on sale in the second half of 2026. Mercedes has not yet revealed pricing, nor has it detailed updates for the AMG S63 or Maybach versions, though those announcements are expected later.

Prices In The Middle East

Official Middle East pricing has not been announced yet. Based on current market positioning, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is expected to start around AED 500,000 for the S500, with the S580 likely crossing AED 600,000. The S580e plug-in hybrid is expected to sit between these two, depending on market and specification.

Final Thoughts

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz S-Class proves that a refresh does not need a full redesign to feel transformative. With star-themed lighting, a deeply digital and AI-driven cabin, and stronger engines, the flagship sedan continues to define modern luxury.

Even without radical styling changes, the updated S-Class makes a clear statement: Mercedes-Benz is still setting the benchmark others are chasing.
