BMW has confirmed that the fifth-generation X5 will continue to offer V-8 performance despite moving to the brand’s new Neue Klasse platform. The announcement comes shortly after the reveal of the all-new 2027 X5, reassuring enthusiasts that powerful combustion engines remain part of BMW’s future.
Although the new platform has been developed with electrification in mind, BMW has designed it to support petrol, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains. As a result, the X5 lineup will continue offering a wide range of choices for buyers across global markets, including the Middle East.
V-8 Performance Model Officially Confirmed
BMW has announced that a V-8-powered M Performance version of the new X5 will join the lineup after the standard petrol, plug-in hybrid, and electric variants.
However, the company later clarified that this model will be an M Performance variant similar to an X5 M60 rather than a full-fledged X5 M. Even so, the confirmation ensures that V-8 power remains alive in BMW’s premium SUV range.
Neue Klasse Platform Supports Every Powertrain
The fifth-generation X5 is built on BMW’s advanced Neue Klasse architecture. While the platform was primarily developed for electric vehicles, it also supports conventional petrol engines and hybrid systems.
Therefore, BMW can offer customers greater flexibility without compromising performance. This strategy also allows the company to meet different market demands as electrification continues to expand worldwide.
Hybrid Assistance Could Join The V-8
BMW has not released technical specifications for the upcoming V-8 model. However, the performance SUV is expected to feature some form of hybrid assistance alongside its eight-cylinder engine.
The current X5 M already uses a 48-VOLT mild-hybrid system with its twin-turbocharged 4.4-LITER V-8. Consequently, the next-generation model could adopt a more advanced hybrid setup to improve efficiency while maintaining strong performance.
Current X5 M Sets A High Benchmark
The existing BMW X5 M remains one of the quickest performance SUVs on the market. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-LITER V-8 produces 617 HP and 553 LB-FT of torque, delivering exceptional acceleration and handling.
Therefore, expectations are high for the upcoming V-8-powered model. BMW is likely to improve both performance and efficiency while meeting increasingly strict emissions regulations.
Electric M Model Could Follow
Alongside the V-8 model, BMW may also introduce a high-performance electric iX5 M in the future. However, the company has not officially confirmed such a model.
Meanwhile, BMW has also remained silent regarding the future of the X6 and X6 M. As a result, it is still unclear whether the coupe-style SUV will receive another generation.
Prices In The Middle East
BMW has not announced official Middle East pricing for the upcoming V-8-powered X5 M Performance model.
Based on the current market and expected positioning, prices are likely to start from around AED 520,000. Final pricing will vary depending on the country, trim level, and optional equipment.
Expected Launch Timeline
BMW will launch the standard petrol-powered 2027 X5 later this year, followed by the plug-in hybrid and fully electric iX5 during early 2027.
Meanwhile, the V-8-powered M Performance variant is expected to arrive after the initial launch. BMW is likely to reveal full specifications and pricing closer to its market introduction.
