BMW Gives The M3 CS A Manual For The First Time

BMW has unveiled the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter as a special farewell edition for the sixth-generation M3. What makes this version unique is the fact that it becomes the first-ever M3 CS to feature a six-speed manual transmission.

The name “Handschalter” translates to “hand shift” in German, perfectly matching the car’s enthusiast-focused personality. BMW will sell the limited-production model exclusively in the United States and Canada, making it one of the rarest modern M cars.

Rear-Wheel Drive Layout Returns

Unlike the standard M3 CS, which comes with xDrive all-wheel drive, the new Handschalter switches to a pure rear-wheel-drive setup. Power comes from the familiar twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine.

However, output is slightly lower than the regular M3 CS. The Handschalter produces 473HP instead of 543HP, matching the power figure of the standard manual M3. BMW claims the sports sedan can sprint from 0-100KM/H in around 4.1 seconds before reaching a top speed of 290KM/H.

Lighter Weight Improves Driving Feel

BMW has focused heavily on reducing weight for the M3 CS Handschalter. The company claims the car is roughly 34KG lighter than the regular M3.Weight savings come from carbon-ceramic brakes, forged wheels, a titanium rear muffler, and lightweight carbon bucket seats. Buyers can also add an optional lightweight strut brace for improved chassis rigidity. BMW has also lowered the ride height slightly and fitted suspension components borrowed from the more hardcore M4 CSL.

Aggressive Styling With Carbon Details

The M3 CS Handschalter gets several visual upgrades that separate it from the standard M3. Exposed carbon fibre appears on the roof, bonnet accents, and multiple exterior trim pieces.

BMW also adds a frameless kidney grille and signature yellow daytime running lights inspired by GT racing cars. Buyers can choose from four paint finishes, including Isle of Man Green, Black Sapphire Metallic, Imola Red, and Techno Violet.

Cabin Combines Luxury With Motorsport Touches

Inside, the M3 CS Handschalter retains BMW’s modern curved digital display setup while adding several performance-inspired touches. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, passive entry, and a Harman Kardon audio system.

The lightweight carbon racing seats add a more focused atmosphere inside the cabin. Buyers wanting extra comfort features such as a head-up display and powered trunk lid will need to choose the optional Daily Driver package.

Limited Production Starts This Summer

BMW says production of the M3 CS Handschalter will begin in July 2026. While the company has not confirmed exact production numbers, it stated that availability will be “very limited.”

The 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter starts at $108,450 before options. Deliveries are expected to begin later this fall, giving enthusiasts one final chance to own a manual-equipped special-edition M3 before the next generation arrives.
