Ford Recalls 1.4 Million F-150 Trucks Over Dangerous Transmission Issue

1 min read

Ford has issued a major recall affecting nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks after a safety investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration escalated. The issue involves a transmission fault that could cause sudden downshifts, increasing the risk of wheel lockup and potential accidents.

Recall Overview & Affected Models

The recall covers approximately 1,392,935 Ford F-150 trucks from the 2015 to 2017 model years. All affected vehicles are equipped with the 6R80 six-speed automatic transmission. Initially, the investigation included around 1.27 million trucks before being officially upgraded to a full recall.

Transmission Fault & Safety Risk

The core issue lies in a signal loss from the Output Shaft Speed sensor. This problem can disrupt communication with the Transmission Range Sensor, leading to unpredictable gear changes. In some cases, the transmission may suddenly downshift multiple gears. As a result, the rear wheels could temporarily lock, especially at speeds between 56 KM/H and 103 KM/H, creating a serious safety hazard.

Reported Incidents & Findings

Ford has reported 444 warranty claims, 121 field reports, and over 300 owner complaints related to the issue. Notably, more than 40 percent of reported cases involved at least one wheel lockup event. Additionally, the company has confirmed two injuries and one accident potentially linked to the defect.

Technical Cause & Behavior

The fault stems from degraded electrical connections within the transmission’s lead frame. This degradation interrupts sensor signals, causing erratic shifting behavior. In certain situations, vehicles may shift into neutral or change direction unexpectedly. For example, a truck reversing uphill could suddenly roll forward if the transmission loses signal.

Remedy & Owner Instructions

Ford will notify affected owners starting in late April 2026. The primary fix involves updating the Powertrain Control Module software. In some cases, dealers may also replace the lead frame component. All repairs will be carried out free of charge at authorized service centers.

Prices In The Middle East

Used Ford F-150 models from 2015 to 2017 are commonly available in the Middle East, with prices ranging from approximately 70,000 AED to 140,000 AED depending on condition and trim. Vehicles included in this recall may require inspection before purchase, making it important for buyers to verify recall status.

Market Impact & Middle East Relevance

The Ford F-150 is widely popular in global markets, including parts of the Middle East. This recall highlights the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks, especially for imported used vehicles. Buyers and owners in the region should ensure their trucks receive the necessary updates to avoid potential risks.

Conclusion

This large-scale recall underscores the seriousness of transmission-related defects in modern vehicles. While Ford has taken steps to address the issue, affected owners should act promptly once notified. Ensuring proper repairs will help maintain safety and reliability for one of the world’s most popular pickup trucks.
