Ford Mustang Baja Reportedly Remains In Development
Ford could be preparing an unexpected new direction for the Mustang with an off-road-focused variant reportedly called the Mustang Baja. According to Automotive News, Ford has shown dealers an off-road Mustang that remains in development. While the company has not confirmed the project, the reported model could expand the Mustang family beyond its traditional road-focused performance role.
Mustang Could Gain An All-Terrain Character
The reported Mustang Baja would be significantly different from the current road-going lineup. Ford could give the model increased ground clearance, a tougher suspension and more aggressive tyres for loose surfaces. An all-wheel-drive system could also provide improved traction away from paved roads. These changes would allow the Mustang to compete in a niche currently dominated by high-performance off-road trucks and SUVs.
V-8 Power Could Make The Baja A Serious Performer
If Ford approves the project, the Mustang Baja could use a V-8 engine to match its extreme appearance with strong performance. One possibility is the supercharged 5.2-litre V-8 from the Mustang Dark Horse SC, which produces 795 HP. However, Ford has not confirmed an engine or power figure for the potential off-road model.
Fox Live Valve Dampers Could Be Used
The suspension would likely receive extensive changes compared with the standard Mustang. Ford could use Fox Live Valve dampers similar to those fitted to the F-150 Raptor and Ranger Raptor. These electronically controlled dampers can adjust their behaviour according to driving conditions. Combined with increased suspension travel and greater ground clearance, the system could make the Mustang considerably more capable on rough terrain.
All-Wheel Drive Could Transform The Mustang
Adding all-wheel drive would represent one of the biggest mechanical changes for the Mustang. The current model traditionally sends power to the rear wheels, supporting its classic sports-car character. For an off-road variant, however, all-wheel drive would provide additional traction on gravel, sand and dirt. It could also help manage the output of a high-powered V-8 on low-grip surfaces.
Ford Has Considered An Off-Road Mustang Before
This is not the first report of an off-road Mustang. Rumours of a Mustang Raptor emerged as early as 2023, with the model reportedly considered for a future launch. A Mustang Baja was later said to have appeared at a private dealer meeting in 2024. The latest report suggests Ford has continued exploring the idea despite the earlier plans changing.
Ford’s Raptor Experience Could Help
Ford already has extensive experience developing high-performance off-road vehicles through its Raptor family. The company also competes in the Dakar Rally with the purpose-built Raptor T1+. This experience could provide useful engineering knowledge for an off-road sports car. However, a Mustang Baja would still need a different approach because it would combine sports-car proportions with off-road capability.
Jim Farley Wants An Off-Road Supercar
Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously expressed interest in developing an off-road supercar. His comments followed Ford’s involvement in the Dakar Rally and the development of the Raptor T1+. While that proposed vehicle was described as a standalone supercar, the Mustang Baja could represent a more practical interpretation of the same idea. It would also give Ford another performance-focused model with an unusual character.
Mustang Redesign Could Create The Right Opportunity
The Mustang is expected to receive a significant redesign before the end of the decade. That timing could provide Ford with an opportunity to introduce an off-road variant alongside the next-generation model. A new platform could make it easier to integrate all-wheel drive, increased suspension travel and other hardware required for rough-terrain driving. However, Ford has yet to confirm whether the Baja name will reach production.
Prices In The Middle East
Ford has not announced pricing for the potential Mustang Baja in Middle Eastern markets. If launched, its combination of V-8 power, all-wheel drive and specialised suspension could place it above conventional Mustang variants. Pricing in the UAE and Saudi Arabia would likely depend on specifications, taxes, optional equipment and dealer costs. Final prices for Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman would also vary by market.
Middle East Could Suit An Off-Road Mustang
The Mustang Baja could find a natural audience in the Middle East, where high-performance vehicles and off-road driving both have strong appeal. Its combination of sports-car styling and all-terrain capability could make it particularly interesting for buyers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The model could also offer a different alternative to performance SUVs and Raptor-branded trucks already popular across the region.

Ford has not confirmed when an off-road Mustang could arrive. However, with the Mustang expected to undergo another major update before the end of the decade, the reported Baja could potentially appear alongside that programme.
