Honda Reportedly Plans A Larger Three-Row SUV

Honda is reportedly considering a larger three-row SUV positioned above the current Pilot. Referred to as the “Pilot XXL” in an internal planning document, the new flagship could enter production in the early 2030s. According to reports, it would offer greater third-row space while using a hybrid powertrain focused on improved efficiency.

Longer Body For More Cabin Space

The Pilot XXL could be around eight inches longer than the current Pilot. This additional length would create more room for third-row passengers and potentially increase overall cabin flexibility. The SUV would target larger three-row models such as the Toyota Grand Highlander and Ford Explorer, which already offer more third-row space than the standard Pilot.

Shared Platform With Acura

Honda is expected to share the Pilot XXL platform with Acura’s planned three-row flagship SUV. The Acura model, reportedly known as the Acura XL, is expected to enter production around 2029. While both SUVs could use related engineering, the Acura would target a more premium segment than the Honda-branded model.

New Hybrid Powertrain

The reported Pilot XXL could use a V6 engine combined with multiple electric motors. Honda’s upcoming hybrid technology is expected to improve fuel efficiency while also reducing system costs. The company has announced plans to introduce 15 new hybrid models globally by 2029, making hybrid power a key part of its future lineup.

Electronic All-Wheel Drive

An electronic all-wheel-drive system could also be available. The setup would likely use an electric motor on the rear axle rather than a traditional mechanical connection between the front and rear axles. Honda already uses a similar approach on the CR-V Hybrid, providing all-wheel-drive capability through electric propulsion at the rear.

Production Could Begin In 2032

Honda could begin production of the Pilot XXL in 2032, with North America considered the likely production region. Honda currently operates several manufacturing facilities across the continent and is also considering another plant. The final production location has not yet been confirmed.

Expected Production Volume

According to the report, Honda expects the larger SUV to achieve annual production of more than 40,000 units. The target reflects continued demand for larger SUVs in the US market. However, Honda has not officially confirmed the Pilot XXL, meaning its specifications, design and production plans could change before launch.

Middle East Relevance

A larger Honda SUV could also fit the preferences of customers in Middle Eastern markets, where three-row SUVs remain popular for family and long-distance use. Additional third-row space could make the Pilot XXL particularly relevant in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. However, Honda has not confirmed whether the future flagship will be offered across the region.

Prices In The Middle East

Honda has not announced pricing for the reported Pilot XXL. The current Pilot starts at just under $44,000 in the US, while the larger hybrid model is expected to sit closer to $50,000. Middle Eastern pricing would depend on local specifications, taxes, import costs and equipment levels. Regional pricing will likely emerge closer to launch.

Expected Launch Timeline

The Honda Pilot XXL remains a reported future project rather than a confirmed production model. If Honda proceeds with the programme, production could begin around 2032 in North America. The larger SUV would then sit above the Pilot and offer a hybrid powertrain, additional third-row space and a larger overall footprint.
