Hyundai & Genesis Prepare For EREV Powertrains
Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrains across Hyundai and Genesis models from 2027. The first two EREV models are expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. Hyundai will introduce the technology on the three-row Santa Fe, while Genesis is expected to use it in the GV70 SUV. The new system aims to combine electric driving performance with extended driving range.
Santa Fe EREV Gets Dual Electric Motors
The first Hyundai EREV will be based on the Santa Fe SUV. It will use two electric motors that are expected to drive the front and rear axles, providing all-wheel drive. Hyundai claims a combined driving range of more than 600 miles. The company also says acceleration should feel similar to that of a fully electric vehicle. The Santa Fe EREV will be manufactured in the United States.
Genesis GV70 EREV Targets Longer Range
Genesis will introduce EREV technology on the compact GV70 SUV. The model is expected to offer a combined range of around 640 miles, making it the longer-range option of the two announced models. Genesis has not confirmed whether the GV70 will share the Santa Fe’s exact powertrain. The brand could instead use a modified system suited to its premium positioning and performance requirements.
How Hyundai’s EREV Technology Works
An EREV uses an electric drivetrain as its primary propulsion system while an internal-combustion engine generates electricity when required. The battery can therefore remain smaller than that of a comparable fully electric vehicle. This approach can provide electric driving characteristics while reducing concerns about charging infrastructure and long-distance travel. Hyundai Motor Group sees EREV technology as a bridge between conventional hybrid vehicles and full electrification.
Traditional Hybrid Models Will Also Expand
Hyundai Motor Group will continue developing conventional gas-electric hybrid powertrains alongside its EREV models. The company plans to introduce more than 10 new hybrid models by 2030. It also expects hybrids to account for half of its North American sales by that time. Although these targets focus on North America, the wider expansion of hybrid technology could influence future Hyundai and Genesis product strategies in Middle Eastern markets.
New Pickup Trucks & Body-On-Frame SUVs Planned
Hyundai is also preparing to enter additional vehicle segments with new pickup trucks and body-on-frame SUVs. A new body-on-frame platform is planned, with the Boulder concept providing an indication of the company’s future direction. These models could give Hyundai a stronger presence in markets where rugged SUVs and pickups remain popular. The company has not yet confirmed production specifications or launch details for these vehicles.
Genesis Could Add A Luxury Off-Roader
Genesis is also considering expanding beyond its current SUV range with a luxury off-road model. The brand has not confirmed production plans or technical specifications for such a vehicle. However, the potential model would give Genesis an opportunity to compete in the premium luxury SUV segment. For Middle Eastern markets, a larger and more capable Genesis SUV could complement the brand’s existing GV70, GV80 and GV80 Coupe offerings.
Prices In The Middle East
Hyundai and Genesis have not announced Middle East pricing for their upcoming EREV models. Official UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman prices should arrive closer to their respective launches. Pricing will depend on specifications, equipment, taxes, registration costs and dealer pricing. Since the EREV models are still under development, any current AED estimate would be speculative and is therefore not provided.
Launch Timeline & Middle East Availability
Hyundai and Genesis are targeting the first half of 2027 for the initial EREV launches. The Santa Fe EREV will be built in the United States, while the GV70 is currently produced in Ulsan, South Korea.
