Jeep could add a more powerful engine to the Grand Cherokee for 2028. Reports suggest the SUV may receive Stellantis’ twin-turbocharged Hurricane inline-six. The engine would sit above the current four-cylinder option. It could also improve towing capability. However, Jeep has not officially confirmed the new powertrain.

Hurricane Inline-Six Could Join The Lineup

According to Moparinsiders, Jeep is reportedly preparing the Hurricane inline-six for the 2028 Grand Cherokee. The SUV could use the standard-output version of the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine. This version already powers several Stellantis vehicles. Jeep has not confirmed the report, so the engine remains unconfirmed for now.

420 HP Could Replace The V-8 Role

The standard-output Hurricane produces 420 HP and 468 LB-FT of torque in other Stellantis applications. The figures would give the Grand Cherokee a major increase over its current four-cylinder engine. The six-cylinder would also exceed the old 5.7-litre HEMI V-8, which produced 360 HP and 390 LB-FT in the Grand Cherokee.

More Torque Could Increase Towing

The extra torque could make the Hurricane-powered Grand Cherokee more capable when towing. The current four-cylinder version can tow up to 2,812 KG. Jeep has not confirmed a new towing rating for the six-cylinder. Still, its higher torque output should give the SUV more pulling power under load.

High-Output Version May Not Arrive

Stellantis offers two versions of the Hurricane inline-six. The standard-output engine makes 420 HP and 468 LB-FT. The high-output version develops 550 HP and 531 LB-FT. The Grand Cherokee is reportedly set to receive the standard-output unit. There is no indication that the 550 HP version will enter the regular lineup.

V-8 Could Remain Exclusive To SRT

The return of a V-8 to the regular Grand Cherokee appears unlikely. Stellantis has previously indicated that the 5.7-litre HEMI does not fit the positioning of the SUV. Jeep is instead using newer turbocharged engines across the range. However, a future Grand Cherokee SRT could follow a different path.

Grand Cherokee SRT Is Still Coming

Jeep has confirmed plans for a Grand Cherokee SRT. The performance-focused model could potentially use a V-8. One possibility is Stellantis’ supercharged 6.2-litre V-8, although Jeep has not confirmed an engine for the SRT. The standard Grand Cherokee is therefore expected to rely on the Hurricane inline-six for more performance.

Hurricane Prototype Was Already Tested

Jeep has already demonstrated a Hurricane-powered Grand Cherokee prototype. The prototype used the high-output version of the 3.0-litre engine. It also featured a technology called eBoost Air. The system aims to reduce turbo lag and could theoretically increase output to around 640 HP. However, this technology is not expected on the 2028 production model.

Prices In The Middle East

Jeep has not announced pricing for a Hurricane-powered Grand Cherokee in the Middle East. The Grand Cherokee is already sold in markets such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but specifications and engine options vary by country. Middle East pricing for the 2028 model should be announced closer to its launch.

A More Powerful Grand Cherokee Could Be Coming

The Hurricane inline-six could give the Grand Cherokee a stronger alternative to its current four-cylinder powertrain. Its 420 HP and 468 LB-FT output would also provide more muscle than the previous HEMI V-8. If Jeep confirms the engine, the 2028 Grand Cherokee could gain stronger performance and greater towing capability without bringing the V-8 back to the regular range.
