Mercedes-AMG To Drop 4 Cylinders – Welcome Back V8

1 min read

Just a few years ago, Mercedes-AMG launched the new generation of the C63 AMG sedan, and that was a decision that was quite unwelcome in the automotive industry. The C63’s pride was always its V8 engine in a compact sedan body that made it one of the best driving sedans ever. Mercedes dropped the V8 and put a 4-cylinder Hybrid system into the new C63.

The customers disliked this new 4-cylinder which made it a flop in terms of units sold. The enthusiasts have finally won, Mercedes is dropping the 4-cylinder. Welcome back AMG.

4 Cylinder To Be Replaced

Finally, Mercedes-AMG is transitioning away from the four-cylinder hybrid powertrain and back towards the potent inline-six and V8 powertrains more traditionally associated with the AMG brand. The report says that the 671 HP plug-in hybrid powertrain will be phased out of the current C63 and GLC63 models, and that the M139 turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four engine could also be dropped from other AMG models, such as the SL43, in favour of a more natural inline-six unit. We also know that AMG is moving forward with a new generation of V8 engines, which will be used in 48-volt hybrid and plug-in hybrid applications, which could be extremely powerful.

Hybrids Are The Way To Go

Although the four-cylinder may be on its way out, AMG remains committed to plug-in hybrids. The hybrid system is an extremely heavy system that increases the weight of the car dramatically, for which a 4-cylinder engine is simply not enough. While at the same time, pairing it with a bigger displacement could make sense as the engine and the hybrid system can make enough power to compensate for the increased weight.

Verdict – A Win For Enthusiasts.

This proves once again that car companies should listen to their fans—and Mercedes is finally doing just that. By bringing back the V8 in their hybrid models, they’re making a smart move.
