Mini has introduced the 1998 GT as the latest special edition in its “Icon Drop” series. The new model combines the standard Cooper’s 161 HP engine with the more capable suspension and braking hardware from the hotter John Cooper Works models.

Priced below $40,000, the 1998 GT aims to offer a middle ground between the standard Cooper and the performance-focused JCW.

JCW Hardware With 161 HP

The Mini 1998 GT uses the Cooper’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 161 HP. While that output falls well short of the JCW Cooper, Mini has fitted the GT with the same suspension and brake setup used by the higher-performance model.

This means the special edition should deliver sharper handling and stronger braking without the more aggressive powertrain.

A Middle Ground In The Lineup

Mini positions the 1998 GT as a Goldilocks option for buyers who find the regular Cooper too mild but the JCW too extreme.

The chassis upgrades should make the GT more capable through corners, although its 161 HP engine means it will not match the acceleration of the JCW.

Pricing Creates Tough Competition

The Mini 1998 GT starts at $38,225, keeping it below the $40,000 mark. However, its position within the Mini range makes the pricing somewhat complicated.

The Cooper S costs less than $35,000 while producing 201 HP. Meanwhile, the JCW starts at $40,075 and delivers 228 HP. As a result, the 1998 GT sits very close to both models despite offering less power than either performance-oriented alternative.

Icon Drop Series Continues

Mini has already opened reservations for the 1998 GT. The special edition is part of the brand’s ongoing Icon Drop series, which focuses on limited-run models with distinctive specifications.

Mini also has two more Icon Drop models planned. The next special edition is scheduled to be revealed in October.

Prices In The Middle East

Mini has not announced Middle East pricing for the 1998 GT. If introduced in markets such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, local pricing would likely differ from the US figure because of taxes, specifications and market positioning.

The $38,225 US starting price places the 1998 GT close to the upper end of the standard Cooper range.

Verdict

The 2027 Mini 1998 GT takes an interesting approach by pairing the Cooper’s modest 161 HP output with JCW suspension and brakes. It should offer a sharper driving experience without the full intensity of the JCW.

However, its pricing makes the decision less straightforward, especially with the more powerful Cooper S and JCW sitting so close in price.
