Nissan is bringing its e-Power hybrid technology to the U.S. market with the 2027 X-TRAIL Hybrid. The new SUV uses a series-hybrid setup, where a petrol engine charges the battery while electric motors drive the wheels. Nissan expects up to 38 MPG combined for the new model. The X-TRAIL name is already used across the Middle East, where Nissan offers the SUV in several 5- and 7-seat configurations.
Nissan X-TRAIL Gets e-Power Hybrid Technology
The new X-TRAIL Hybrid uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as a generator. The engine does not directly drive the wheels. Instead, it charges the battery, which then powers two electric motors. One motor works on each axle, giving the SUV all-wheel drive and a combined 225 HP output. Nissan estimates 40 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway and 38 MPG combined.
Electric Motors Drive The Wheels
Nissan’s e-Power system differs from a conventional hybrid setup. The electric motors handle all wheel movement, while the petrol engine focuses on generating electricity. The engine can also shut off when the battery has enough charge. This layout gives the X-TRAIL an electric-motor driving feel without requiring the driver to plug it in.
New Braking Technology Adds Efficiency

The 2027 X-TRAIL Hybrid also introduces new braking technology. Nissan’s e-Pedal system allows one-pedal driving through regenerative braking. A new Smooth Stop function controls brake pressure automatically. It aims to make stops smoother and reduce the forward movement passengers can feel during braking.
Larger Screens & Updated Cabin
The X-TRAIL Hybrid receives a redesigned dashboard and updated interior materials. The entry-level model gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims with the Technology package receive a larger 14.3-inch display with a Google-based operating system. The system includes Google Maps, Gemini AI and the Play Store. The range also gets a 15-watt Qi2 magnetic wireless charger.
ProPILOT Assist Gets More Technology

Nissan has updated the X-TRAIL’s ProPILOT Assist system for the new model. It uses a new front radar sensor, a wider-angle front camera and updated software. Nissan says the system can maintain lane position more effectively and handle curves at higher speeds. It can also perform automatic lane changes. Hands-off Traffic Jam Support allows temporary hands-free operation in certain low-speed conditions on divided highways.
Practicality Remains A Key Focus
The new X-TRAIL Hybrid also focuses on family-friendly practicality. Its rear doors can open to almost 90 degrees, making it easier to load passengers and child seats. Nissan says the SUV offers 40.9 inches of front headroom. Cargo capacity stands at 31 cubic feet with the second row upright. Folding the rear seats increases this to 66 cubic feet. The X-TRAIL Hybrid can also tow up to 1,500 pounds.
New Design For The Hybrid SUV
The 2027 X-TRAIL Hybrid gets sharper exterior detailing and a more intricate front grille. Illuminated elements surround the headlights, while a full-width taillight is available. The SUV also features a practical rear-seat layout with five LATCH anchors. This allows families to place a child seat in the centre position while retaining space for two more seats.
X-TRAIL Hybrid Rivals Other Electrified SUVs
The new X-TRAIL Hybrid will compete with hybrid compact SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson in the U.S. Nissan will initially launch the range in SR form with the Technology package. The company plans to add more versions later, including SV, SV Premium, SR and Platinum trims.
Prices In The Middle East
Nissan has not announced whether this new e-Power X-TRAIL Hybrid will launch in the Middle East. The current regional X-TRAIL range uses different powertrain and trim configurations from the upcoming U.S.-market hybrid. Nissan currently offers the X-TRAIL across Middle Eastern markets, including 2WD and 4WD versions with five- and seven-seat layouts.
Nissan Expands Its Hybrid Strategy

The 2027 X-TRAIL Hybrid gives Nissan a new approach to electrification. Its e-Power system combines an internal-combustion engine with electric-motor-driven wheels. Nissan has already identified the X-TRAIL and Rogue Hybrid e-Power as part of its future global model strategy.
