Toyota arrived at the Tokyo Auto Salon with plenty of hype surrounding a potential mid-engined MR2 revival, but instead of a two-seat sports car, the spotlight fell on a hardcore new version of its rally-bred hot hatch. The result is the Toyota GR Yaris Morizo RR, a limited-production special edition inspired directly by motorsport and the personal involvement of Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda.
GR Yaris Morizo RR Debuts At Tokyo Auto Salon

The GR Yaris Morizo RR was revealed as a prototype at the Tokyo Auto Salon, instantly standing out thanks to its aggressive aero and exclusive visual details. While MR2 rumors dominated pre-show speculation, Toyota chose to double down on the GR Yaris, reinforcing its commitment to compact performance cars with strong racing DNA.
Toyota confirmed that the Morizo RR will be a limited-production model, offered only in Japan and Europe. Just 100 units will be allocated to each market, making it one of the rarest GR Yaris variants ever produced.
Inspired By Akio Toyoda’s Racing Experience
The Morizo RR takes its name from Akio Toyoda’s racing alter ego, Morizo. Toyoda competed in the 2025 Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race, and the lessons learned from that experience directly shaped this special edition. Toyota describes the car as a passion project, developed to reflect real-world motorsport demands rather than marketing trends.
As a personal touch, each Morizo RR features Toyoda’s signature on the windshield, emphasizing the car’s connection to its creator.
Unique Exterior Design & Aero Upgrades
Every GR Yaris Morizo RR is finished in an exclusive Gravel Khaki paint color, ensuring instant recognition. The exterior is further distinguished by matte bronze wheels paired with yellow-painted brake calipers, creating a bold contrast against the muted body color.
Aerodynamic upgrades are a major highlight. The carbon-fiber hood reduces weight at the front, while a large carbon-fiber rear wing was developed using data from Toyota’s race car program. These changes are designed to improve stability and downforce at high speeds, particularly on track.
Focused Interior With Motorsport Touches
Inside, the Morizo RR receives several upgrades aimed at driver engagement. A smaller-diameter steering wheel wrapped in microsuede improves grip and feedback, while unique paddle shifters and motorsport-inspired switches enhance control during aggressive driving.
Yellow stitching runs throughout the cabin, adding contrast to the otherwise dark interior. The car also features a fully digital instrument cluster that includes a dedicated “Morizo” drive mode. This mode replaces the standard Gravel setting and is tuned specifically for spirited performance driving.
A serialized plaque inside the cabin marks each car’s place in the limited production run, further reinforcing its collectible status.
Powertrain & Chassis Enhancements
Power comes from Toyota’s familiar 1.6-LITER turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 257 HP. In the Morizo RR, this engine is paired exclusively with an 8-SPEED automatic transmission and Toyota’s GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system.
The suspension has been specially retuned, with revised dampers developed using feedback from Nürburgring testing. Toyota also recalibrated the power steering system to deliver sharper response and improved feel, particularly during high-speed cornering and track use.
Extremely Limited Availability
Toyota has confirmed that the GR Yaris Morizo RR will not be sold in the United States. Buyers in Japan and Europe will need to enter a lottery to secure one of the 200 total cars produced. Entry will be handled through Toyota’s GR app, adding an extra layer of exclusivity to the ownership process.
Prices In The Middle East
Toyota has not announced pricing for the GR Yaris Morizo RR, and the model is not planned for sale in Middle Eastern markets. For reference, the standard GR Yaris is priced in select international markets at the equivalent of approximately AED 150,000 to AED 180,000, depending on specification. Given its limited production, exclusive features, and motorsport-inspired upgrades, the Morizo RR would likely command a significant premium if it were ever offered in the region.
What This Means For Toyota Performance Cars

The GR Yaris Morizo RR shows that Toyota is still heavily invested in enthusiast-focused vehicles, even amid rumors of new sports car revivals like the MR2. While fans may have to wait longer for a mid-engined return, this limited-edition hot hatch proves that Toyota’s performance division remains driven by racing passion rather than nostalgia alone.
