Electric GTI Badge Makes Historic Debut
Volkswagen has officially unveiled the all-new ID. Polo GTI, marking the first time the iconic GTI badge has been used on a fully electric vehicle. Unlike Volkswagen’s previous GTX-branded electric performance models, the ID. The Polo GTI directly carries forward the legacy of the legendary hot-hatch lineup. However, the electric hatchback will remain exclusive to select global markets and is not expected to launch in the United States.
The ID. Polo GTI is based on the recently introduced all-electric seventh-generation ID. Polo hatchback. With this launch, Volkswagen aims to preserve the sporty character and driver-focused appeal associated with the GTI badge while transitioning toward electrification. The model combines compact dimensions, front-wheel-drive dynamics and aggressive styling cues inspired by earlier GTI generations.
ID. Polo GTI Powertrain & Performance Details

The ID. Polo GTI uses a single front-mounted electric motor producing 223 HP and 213 LB-FT of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the front wheels through an electronically controlled differential designed to improve traction and cornering stability. Volkswagen claims the electric hot hatch can accelerate from 0-100 KM/H in 6.8 seconds while achieving a top speed of 174 KM/H.
The hatchback is equipped with adaptive suspension and revised steering calibration for a sportier driving experience. Volkswagen has also introduced a dedicated GTI drive mode, activated through a steering-wheel-mounted button. This mode sharpens throttle response, changes chassis settings and alters the digital display graphics to deliver a more performance-focused driving environment.
Battery, Charging & Driving Range
Powering the ID. Polo GTI is a 52-kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack. On the WLTP test cycle, Volkswagen claims a maximum driving range of up to 423 KM on a full charge. Under EPA-style estimates, this could translate to approximately 358 KM in real-world usage conditions.
The electric hatchback supports DC fast charging at speeds of up to 105 kW. Volkswagen says the battery can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes under ideal charging conditions. Despite its sporty setup, the ID. Polo GTI maintains relatively practical usability for daily urban driving and longer highway journeys.
Exterior Design Gets Traditional GTI Touches
The ID. Polo GTI receives several visual upgrades over the standard electric hatchback to reflect its performance-oriented identity. The front fascia features signature red accents integrated into the full-width LED light strip, while the bumper includes vertical fins inspired by motorsport tow hooks. A more aggressive honeycomb-style lower intake also enhances the sporty appearance.
At the rear, the hatchback gains a redesigned bumper with a two-piece diffuser and a split roof spoiler housing the brake light in the center. Volkswagen has also fitted unique 19-inch alloy wheels featuring silver trapezoidal cutouts around a black inner section. Overall proportions remain compact, but the styling clearly communicates its GTI heritage.
Interior Combines Modern Tech With Retro Inspiration

Inside, the ID. Polo GTI blends modern digital technology with nostalgic design references from older GTI models. Red contrast stitching appears across the cabin, including on the steering wheel and dashboard trim. The seats feature patterned inserts inspired by the tartan upholstery seen in classic GTI hatchbacks.
The dashboard houses a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Volkswagen has also added retro-inspired display themes that mimic the gauges from the first-generation Golf GTI. In retro mode, even the media display changes appearance, showing cassette tape graphics for music playback to celebrate the GTI lineage.
Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI Launch Timeline & Pricing

The ID. Polo GTI is expected to go on sale in Germany later this year. Volkswagen has indicated pricing will start at approximately $45,000. While the hatchback is unlikely to be offered in markets such as the United States, it could become an important model for Europe’s growing compact EV performance segment.
With the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen has taken a major step toward preserving the GTI identity in the electric era. The hatchback combines strong performance, recognizable styling elements, and modern EV technology while attempting to retain the engaging character that made GTI models globally popular for decades.
